must have been tokyo formed in 2003 in lucerne, switzerland when two brothers and their best friend decided to reunite their high school indie-band. since their taste in music had changed somewhat, strumming guitars 1990s style was no longer an option. they wanted their sound to be chic and danceable. a handy drummer was found soon at some girlfriend’s best friend’s party and a persisting love for 80’s wave and postpunk lead to the recruitment of a guy in possession of an old analogue synthesizer (who happened to be the new flatmate of the singer). money for a proper record was not available, thus the struggle for gigs was carried out spreading cheap demo-tapes and alternately intimidating or begging bookers and club owners. without having anything released, probably mainly through mouth to mouth propaganda, the boys were booked to support well-known artists such as the gossip, peaches, the sunshine underground or yousayparty! wesaydie! and played the stages of renowned swiss clubs like abart, fri-son or mascotte. earlier this year (2007) the band has recorded its first EP, mostly with borrowed equipment. in a cold and abandoned storage room right next to a railway line they somehow managed to hold down eight songs (in spite of frozen fingers and shaking walls). everything was recorded and produced by the band themselves. berne based ben stoll, more famous for his work with hip-hop artists (e.g. kutti MC), mixed and mastered the result, eight songs as a resume of their work in the last 3 years. or how the band likes to put it: dance music for people who can’t dance. releases:
